"Mastering Diabetes" is for everyone wanting to prevent health diseases — even without diabetes
I don’t have diabetes.
But diabetes has shaped my life in more ways than I ever expected.
My mother passed away from a diabetes-related stroke, and though I’ve always tried to eat clean and stay proactive about my health, I recently got a wake-up call: my A1c levels came back elevated.
I was shocked. Honestly, I was frustrated. I thought I was doing everything “right.” We were eating as whole-food and plant-forward as we could, but clearly something wasn’t working. And worse, I felt scared. I knew I had to buckle down and FIGURE THIS OUT.
That’s when I picked up the book Mastering Diabetes by Cyrus Khambatta PhD and Robby Barbaro MPH, and it completely shifted my understanding of what’s really going on inside our bodies—especially when it comes to blood sugar, insulin resistance, and inflammation.
What makes this book different from others? For starters, these authors are not just influenced by their own experiences with Type 1 Diabetes, but have the kind of personalities, ambition and drive to take control of their lives, despite their diagnoses. Not satisfied with victimhood or surrender, they dug DEEP in terms of education and sheer effort to work to change the landscape of their lives. I was pretty impressed with that, and it made me want to listen.
Secondly, I read what they wrote, believed, applied their advice, and.....it worked. Amazingly and quickly. The research and information they shared was new to me, but also resonated with everything I've learned over the years. I like to measure things that way -- how it stands up to the wisdom of the ages.
Even if diabetes isn’t your main concern, I believe this book is still for you.
Why? Because insulin resistance and poor blood sugar control are connected to so many chronic conditions beyond diabetes:
Heart disease
Alzheimer’s
Nerve damage and foot problems
Eye damage
Hearing loss
Increased risk of infection
Skin problems…and more.
At my age and stage, these ailments have taken on a whole new significance to me.
The authors do such an amazing job of breaking down the science in a way that finally made sense to me. I understood what was happening in my body, and more importantly, I learned what I could do about it.
When I combined what I learned from Mastering Diabetes with the structured food plan I’ve been following with PlantWhys, things started to change. My A1c dropped back to a healthy range, the stubborn weight I couldn’t shake started to melt off, and my energy improved in a way I hadn’t felt in years. My husband experienced similar results and was able to reverse neuropathy in his feet as well.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing all the right things but not seeing results—especially when it comes to blood sugar, inflammation, or just general health—I highly recommend this book. It gave me the knowledge and motivation I needed to truly take control of my health.

* You don’t need to wait for a diagnosis to start making changes. Prevention is powerful—and possible.

Tip: I ordered a hard copy, but ended up listening on audible as well. The authors narrate the book themselves and I love their additional comments. It also allowed me to listen while I worked.
